Vaccines....Why MORE is NOT Always Better

Did you ever have a dog die young?   Get sick  with lymphoma, cancer, auto immune, etc...only months following  a series of vaccines?

MY BEST ADVICE:

The most IMPORTANT thing a person can do for their dog is to...

PROTECT THEIR DOG'S IMMUNE SYSTEM AT ALL COST!!!

As a pet owner, we often go out of our way to ensure that our pets are protected from diseases that can kill them.  Am important WARNING:  If you over immunize your dog, you can run the risk of doing more harm than good.

  HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Have you ever known anyone who used too much fertilizer on their lawn?    If a little fertilizer is good for your lawn...then more is even better.   Right?   WRONG!   The lawn will FRY if you put too much fertilizer on it.   More is definitely not better!   You need just the right amount, to get the desired affect you seek.   The same can be said with vaccines.   If you give too many vaccines, you will run the risk of crashing your dog's immune system.

Ultimately, Vaccines are the choice and responsibility of the pet owner, as to how they follow through on vaccines after your puppy arrives.   These decisions are yours, not your Veterinarians.

Finding the Best Veterinarian for Your Dog

I prefer using Vets that offer a holistic or natural approach and  who are focused on protecting the immune system of my dogs.   Most Holistic Vets are certified and offer both natural methods & traditional medicine.  If you find a Vet that thinks the same way you do, it will spare you much aggravation when approaching this sensitive and political subject.   I have found that many Vets use a "Fry the Lawn" approach to immunizations.

How Holistic Vets Do Vaccines Differently

Vets who offer natural approaches will often give each vaccine separately.  They will give Distemper, then do a titer test.   They will give Parvo, then do a titer test.  They always run titer test before giving your dog unnecessary vaccines.   A titer test will reflect how much immunities your dog has for each disease.    When a dog has reached sufficient levels of immunities, they do not give more vaccines.   By far, the safest approach to vaccines.   It may cost a little more to run titers, but it can spare you thousands of dollars later by lowering the chance of your dog developing auto immune related diseases, thyroid, cancer, or other serious health disorders.

TITER TESTING

You can learn more about titer testing in dogs at the following links:

http://ezinearticles.com/?Titer-Testing-Dogs---The-Alternative-to-Over-Vaccinating&id=1652954

Many vaccine companies are now doing 5 in 1...or even 8 in 1 vaccines.  I never vaccinate my dogs with that many diseases all at once.    I vaccinate as gently as possible.   Just be aware, some Vets that do not deal with titers, do not know how to read them.  Titers is not an exact science.

PHONE INTERVIEWS

Call around until you find a Vet who is willing to work with you on this important subject.   I always do phone interviews before I waste my money with an appointment.   The staff should be able to tell you:  Does this Vet offer titer testing?  What brand of vaccine do you use?   How often does this Vet like you to come in for boosters?   Does the Vet vaccinate dogs with Thyroid?    Does this Vet give combined shots, worm medication and rabies at the same appointment?  (too much at once)  Do they encourage vaccines such as lepto?  Learn to ask the right questions.

EDUCATE...EDUCATE...EDUCATE

BLIND IS FOR BATS NOT DOG OWNERS

Follow your instincts and do not follow your Vet's advice "blindly".   I stress the word BLINDLY.  Educate yourself first.  YOU make the final decision.   And YOU are accountable for the outcome of that decision.   You have the right to deny any vaccine you choose.  If you are not comfortable with a vaccine that your Vet wants to give your dog, then tell him..."I would like to research that disease first, so I can make a educated decision".    Research it...then decide.  Do not let your Vet put you on the spot or pressure you into it.  Once the vaccine is given, you can NEVER take it back.

I also recommend to all of my people that they buy and read the following book.   It is a source of many studies done by Universities around the world.  You can buy it at Amazon.

"What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines"  by Catherine O'Driscoll.

Here is a glimpse of what you will find in the book....

http://www.dogsadversereactions.com/scienceVaccineDamage.html

Become an advocate for your dog.   Read books and links on both sides of the fence.    After Educating yourself, then find a Veterinarian who shares your belief system.

If your Vet's number one priority is not protecting the immune system of your dog....Find a Vet who believes as you do.

Beware of the word "PREVENTIVE" care in adds, if you are a conservative vaccine person.   There are those that consider pounding your dog full of vaccines on a yearly basis, as preventative care.

Follow your own heart on the matter.   Follow your instincts.   Read the studies in good books & links on both sides, then make a decision based on the knowledge you have acquired.

Educate Yourself on Vaccines & Diseases

Know What Diseases you are Vaccinating Against

...One of many links:   http://www.canismajor.com/dog/disease1.html

Search out each disease first...then make an educated choice about which vaccines you want to give your dog.  Some diseases only cause coughing, loose stools, etc.  I never do the Leptospirosis, Bortello or Influenza vaccine.  My personal choice.    Not all of the diseases that Vets give vaccines for are deadly.   I mostly vaccinate for the deadly diseases.  Parvo & Distemper can kill quickly.  So I do give these vaccines.

WARNING...Vaccines should NOT be given to a SICK dog.

What is considered sick?   Allergies?   Thyroid?   There are some Vets that may vaccinate sick dogs in spite of the warnings from the vaccine companies.   If they do so, there is a possibility that they may not be following the recommendations put out by these vaccine companies.   Some Vets do not like to write vaccine waivers for sick dogs because of liability.   If the dog were to bite someone, there is risk of liability for all parties.   Still not a good reason to vaccinate a sick dog.   If you Vet caused the death of your dog by vaccinating them when they were sick, you may choose to seek legal advice.  This is a great site:

http://www.animallaw.info/articles/arusfavrevetmalpractice.htm

Rabies is the ONLY vaccine that the law mandates.   Most companies recommend Rabies vaccines should not be given to seriously sick dogs.

VACCINE REACTIONS

What to do if your dog has a vaccine reaction:  You can request a copy of your pet's chart to find out what vaccine the Vet used.  Vets need to be held accountable if they are not following proper vaccine protocol.  But remember....It is your responsibility to inform your Vet if your dog has been sick prior to administering vaccines.    Ask your Vet if he reported this as a vaccine reaction.   Do not assume that he will report it, or even acknowledge that is was a vaccine reaction.   The Internet is loaded with information on vaccines reactions and side effects for a valid reason.   Many Vets use the "Fry the Lawn" approach.    I enjoy the dog4dogs site.

http://www.dogs4dogs.com/blog/2011/12/17/why-vets-dont-recognize-vaccine-reactions/

http://www.dogs4dogs.com/shots.html

Remember:  If your dog is under the care of a Vet for an illness or undergoing an operation, they should never give a vaccine without the consent of the owner first.  When a dog is in a weakened state of being, it is not the best time to vaccinate.

RABIES WAIVERS

DID YOU KNOW...That your Vet can write a WAIVER for rabies, if your dog has a serious illness?

If your Vet will not write your dog a waiver for your severely sick dog, then call around until you find a Vet that will.

What I Consider the BIGGEST LIE In The Field of Animal Care

When a dog gets sick and the pet owner ask the Vet...

"Could this disease be caused by, or related to, the dog's vaccines?"

The GENERIC answer..."NO it is not related....If the dog has a reaction, it is usually within the first 24 hours."

I feel this is one of the MOST MISLEADING statements used in the field of Veterinary medicine.   Why?   Simple....Because that statement Does not include auto immune, cancer and other long term illnesses which have been linked to vaccines in studies done around the world.    It accounts for immediate reactions only.   Auto Immune related diseases do not surface over night.  Certainly not within 24 hours.  Auto Immune takes on many forms.   You do not grow a cancer tumor in 24 hours.

Life is fragile, and so is a dog's immune system.

Remember....Too many vaccines, is not always better.   You need just the right amount, to get the desired result.   And YOU determine the amount!

Buy good books.   A few dollars now, can spare you tons of grief, and thousands of dollars in vet bills later.   Be an advocate for your pet.

You are all they have.
