What personality of puppy do you Prefer?  This is to get you thinking about what you prefer in a dog.  We consider all puppies little spirit beings, each with their own uniqueness.  We feel that a good personality match between the owner & the puppy is very important.   At the end of the day, the "looks" of the dog become secondary....it is the personality that you get to live with.

Is a Tibetan Terrier the Right Dog for Your Family?

Will there be at least one person who is a stay at home worker?  Some, but not all, TTs will have separation anxiety issue if left alone all the time as puppies.  Each dog is different.   Most will eventually mature out of it when they begin to feel secure with your routine and you establish yourself as the Alfa and caregiver.  Dogs need a confident Alfa leader to feel secure.

If you are not a stay at home worker, do you have another dog to keep your puppy company during the day?  TTs are very social and love having other dogs around to play with.

Do you plan on leaving the puppy for hours on end in a kennel?  TTs do not like being shoved in a kennel all day.  Isolation will make a Tibetan Terrier  neurotic.  They are companion dogs.   Companionship goes both ways.

Do you plan on keeping the dog in an outside kennel all day?  TTs love playing outside but do not like being isolated outside all day long...get a Husky.  Some breeds actually prefer outdoor living.

Is your household a high stress environment?  TTs are sensitive to high stress and the emotion in your home.  They become upset with contention and angry emotional energy.  They are smart, sensitive dogs.

Do your children play rough with animals?  Rough housing can lead to aggression in ANY dog.  Play gently and never pick up a puppy when they are in a "rough playing pack mentality".  They are dogs and they will growl at you if they are in an agitated pack mode.  Do not take this personal.  That is how a dog communicates something they do not like.  Always pick a puppy up when they are in a calm submissive state.  Give a puppy a treat every time you pick them up and they will associate being picked up as a positive thing, not an act of aggression from you.  Eventually your dog will beg to be picked up.  Never rough house.  Gentle play is ok.

A Tibetan Terrier is not a "Purse Puppy".  What I mean by that is that they are very intelligent.  Intelligence comes with a certain amount of challenge for the owner.  A not so bright dog can be less hassle in some ways and make a better fit for  people who are not up to the challenge of having a smart dog.  There are pros and cons to every dog.   Are you up to the challenge?  Do you have the time & dedication it takes to  train a smart dog?  If you can dedicate six months to your Tibetan Terrier for training, then you will have a wonderful dog for life.  Tibetan Terriers form a special "spiritual bond" with their owners unlike any other dog I have ever met.  They are extremely loyal and dedicated to their owners.
